Unit 3: What is Grammar?

(adapted from Scott, Michael R. Reading Text Efficiently.)

1. Read the text below.

“Is it possible to learn a language without learning its grammar?”
“Grammar is difficult and boring, isn’t it?”

Grammar is simply the organization of the elements of a language. Let us take an example:

Without grammar: Preocup    muit    s       as palavr       te      es o texto.
With grammar:
Não te preocupes se não sabes muitas palavras do texto.

Someone who does not know the grammar of Portuguese, who cannot organize the elements, might produce this:
“Aspalavr osabes não texto te se do aspreocup muites”.

But fortunately the organization(grammar) of Portuguese is very similar to the grammar of English. It is not necessary for us to only concentrate on studying
the grammar of English, except in a few cases.

The importance of verbs
It is necessary to recognize the principal elements of each sentence – that is why we practice the verbs.
The verbs usually occupy a central position in the organization of English. If you cannot recognize them, you will find it difficult to understand the English sentence. We will also study those grammatical aspects where the organization English is different from the organization of Portuguese. We believe it is essential to understand
the organization, not simply repeat phrases blindly.
